PITTSBURGH -- If there is a more lovely backdrop for an outfield than the city of Pittsburgh I have not seen it. I managed to catch the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals' in their late-inning 3-2 victory over the Pirates on a cold Pittsburgh night. I sat in the lower section behind home plate and enjoyed a crystal clear view of Roberto Clemente bridge in the foreground just beyond center field. The Pittsburgh skyline frames the Clemente bridge which spans the Allegheny River.
Encircling the grandstand are the names of Pirate heroes like Clemente, Honus Wagner, Ralph Kiner, Willie Stargel, Bill Mazerowski, Pie Traynor, Bill Meyer and Danny Murtaugh
Not much of a Cape League link here, except that one of the CodBall writers happens to be in Pittsburgh tonight and was desparate to make it to PNC Park for the first time. Tomorrow night I may try to find my way outside of Pittsburgh to catch a University of Pittsburgh game, where Nate Reed pitches but is not scheduled to pitch tomorrow night.
The story tonight in Pittsburgh was cold and fairly anemic play from both sides until the late innings. Scott Spezio came through in the 9th to tie the game with a two RBI single. From there we see the coaching genius of Tony LaRussa.
