FALMOUTH -- The Y-D Red Sox tonight beat the Falmouth Commodores 2-0 to repeat as Cape Cod Baseball League Champions. Y-D beat Wareham last year, and also beat Falmouth in 2004 to win the championship. What a study of contrasts. Falmouth trailed for much of the season but surged mid-season and ultimately made it to the championship round. Y-D dominated all season and controlled the final innings of Game 2 of the championship tonight. Y-D won 4 straight post season games this year on the road to the championship.
The CodBall team will have further details on the game later. And stay tuned for season analysis -- like last year's highlight and lowlights.
The game this evening was exciting to be sure. With Buster Posey of Y-D on third, flamethrow Luke Burnett of Falmouth was brought in to face home run king Gordon Beckham in the top of the 8th. Burnett struck out Beckham.
But after an intentional walk, Y-D had the bases were loaded with one out in the 8th. Burnett was throwing 96 mph.
In a blink, Posey scored from third on a suicide squeeze. The second run scored on a passed ball. And that was it.
I've returned to Seattle and listened to Game 2 of the championship game over the internet. Andrew called me from the game and has lots of photos and video.
Trevor Holder started on the mound for Y-D. Christian Friedrich started Falmouth. Side-armed Y-D closer Nick Cassavechia was brought in for the save. He stuck out Joey Wong, gave up a single to Phil Carey, struck out David Adams and then struck out Aja Barto (representing the tying run) to win the championship.
Earlier in the game, Falmouth's Phil Carey, normally a second baseman but filling in for Conor Gilaspie at 3rd, threw out a Y-D Red Sox runner at home keeping the game scoreless. It remained scoreless for much of the game thanks to fine pitching and defense.
