It's Spring Training Somewhere in the World

matt-laporta-mesa-solar-sox.jpgmatt-antonelli-peoria-saguaros.jpgWe may be setting our clocks to "fall back," but in the baseball world there is always a little spring ahead.

Finishing schools for prospects like the Arizona Fall League and the Hawaii Winter League are great places to see the stars of the future -- even while the frost thickens on the Cape. And in Latin America, the Dominican Winter Baseball League, as well as leagues in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela keep big names and prospects fit and ready for spring training in the American MLB.

Wherever there is quality, competitive baseball being played, chances are that former Cape Cod Baseball League players are there, too.

For example, Baseball America reported that former Chatham A's and 2005 CCBL MVP Evan Longoria is playing in the Arizona Fall League this season. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Longoria was to play in the AFL for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Matt Antonelli, from Wake Forest and the Falmouth Commodores, is playing for the AFL's Peoria Saguaros. Matt LaPorta (Y-D) is doing a great job this season in the AFL.

Our friend Brett Sinkbeil (Falmouth / Florida Marlins) is on the Honu roster. Brad Suttle (Wareham / Yankees) is on the Sharks roster in Hawaii.

I'm going to Hawaii in a few weeks but sadly will miss the Hawaii championship series by one day. Sure would like to see Sinkbeil pitch.
