'08 Playoffs (East): Harwich Heads to Championship

by Greg in

It's only fitting that on Falmouth Road Race Day -- a tribute to long-distance endurance -- the Cape League's Eastern Division playoff was decided in the bottom of the 18th. Orleans leftfielder Angelo Songco dropped a Brandon Belt (Texas) drive to leftfield which scored Brian Kemp (St. Johns) from second. Harwich won the Eastern division playoff 1-0 tonight, defeating Orleans in games one and two.

Kemp led off the Mariners' 18th with a single.  Tommy Medica also singled and then Belt drove one to left, where the shortstop and the leftfielder attempted to make the play.

The announcers for tonight's game reported that fog may have been a factor in Songco's error.

Orleans' Alex Hassan (Duke) came in from centerfield to pitch extra innings and did a fabulous job.  I don't know how many innings he pitched.

Commissioner Paul Gallop waived the 11:30 pm curfew.

I don't know if others had trouble but my video pooped out after the 11th.  I had no trouble with audio (WXTK), but the video didn't return.

It was a beautiful day today on the Cape.  As Ernie Banks might have said, let's play two -- and they did.
