Anthony Rendon to Sit Out Summer

by Dave B. in

Anthony RendonOne big-time player who won't be coming to the Cape this summer is Rice University's Anthony Rendon. Rendon, the Owls third baseman, started all 61 games this spring and batted .388 with 20 HR, 72 RBI and a slugging percentage of .702. Those numbers helped to earn Rendon the Conference USA Player of the Year award and Louisville Slugger Freshman of the Year honors. Rendon had been on Bourne's roster and was invited to the Team USA trials.

Rendon injured his right ankle during a 5-3 loss to Louisiana State in an NCAA Super Regional last Saturday. That loss ended Rice's season. I believe Rendon was a lock for Team USA and it is very unlikely that we would have seen him on the Cape. Instead, Rendon will be taking the summer off in hopes of fully rehabbing the ankle.
