The Anglers/Firebirds is one of my favorite CCBL rivalries to watch. It's very special seeing the teams meet at Veteran's Field or Eldredge Park. A weekend game between the two teams can draw as many fans as a playoff game. We're about halfway through the offseason now and high temps are hovering around 30 at our favorite ballfields. Thanks to Dave for gathering the following information from colleges, tweets, and other national sources on the Web:
Although his name is not yet on the roster, Riley Reynolds has indicated to [Dave] that he plans to return to Chatham this summer. Reynolds is a junior infielder at Vanderbilt. His return for a second season with the Anglers may, in part, be dependent on where he is drafted in June.
Sticking with Chatham for a moment, folks asociated with the UCLA program have indicated that freshman RHP Nick Vander Tuig will be the closer for the Bruins this spring. Joining Vander Tuig in Chatham will be Eric Jaffe. Jaffe recently enrolled at UCLA but will be eligible to pitch for the Bruins this spring. He was a 10th round pick by the Boston Red Sox in last June's MLB Draft. UCLA outfielder Beau Amaral is also expected to return to Chatham.
Another Bruin will be playing just a few miles up Route 28 for Orleans. RHP Adam Plutko was a 6th round pick of the Houston Astros in the 2010 draft. Joining Vander Tuig, Jaffe, and Plutko as another of the four true freshmen from UCLA on the Cape will be RHP Zach Weiss who is expected to suit up for Yarmouth-Dennis.
