Name: Matt Lowenstein School / CCBL Team: Loyola Marymount / Orleans Firebirds
At 6'3" and 205 lbs., Lowenstein doesn't fit the physical mold of a leadoff batter. Lowenstein has not produced much power (no homeruns, 5 doubles) but he has proven to be a quality top of the order hitter. So far this season, Lowenstein's 45 hits for a .381 avg. and 17 walks have produced a .457 OBP - good enough to lead the Lions in all four categories.
Lowenstein has started all of L.M.U's 31 games - 28 in leftfield and 3 at first base. The lefty-swinger takes an 11 game hitting streak into today's series opener against Gonzaga.
As a freshman last year, Lowenstein lead the Lions with a .419 OBP and finished second on the team with a .344 avg. He batted an astounding .435 when leading off an inning. The Chino Hills, CA. native was named 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and he was an Honorable Mention All-WCC choice. Lowenstein also was selected as a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger and Ping! Baseball.
For now, Lowenstein is the only player from Loyola Marymount to appear on a Cape League roster but in recent years a number of Lions have graced the diamond at Eldredge Park, including Shon Roe, Matt Koch and Martin Viramontes for last year's edition of the Firebirds.
