Odds 'n Ends, May 18

Jimmie Sherfy (Yarmouth-Dennis) has 16 saves for Oregon. Sherfy has a record of 4-2 with a 2.29 ERA. In 51 innings, he has 78 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .174 avg. Sherfy picked up saves in all three games as the Ducks recently swept USC.  Kansas State's Jared King (Falmouth ) is batting .381 with 7 HR, 45 RBI, a .453 OBP and a 1.032 OPS.

CF Adam Engel (Chatham) returned to Louisville's lineup last week after missing 12 games with a thumb injury on his left (non-throwing) hand. Engel's return should give the Cardinals a boost in a couple areas. In addition to providing outstanding defense, he is batting .312 and has been successful on 32 of 34 stolen base attempts. Sticking with Louisville for a moment, Jared Ruxer will be bringing some impressive credentials to Wareham this summer. Ruxer is 7-1 with a 2.49 ERA over 61.1 innings. Opposing batters are hitting .232 off Ruxer.

San Diego St. RHP Michael Cederoth (Wareham) was hit in the face by line drive last weekend. It has been reported that Cederoth suffered multiple fractures of his jaw and that he may be done for the season.

In more Gatemen medical news, LSU catcher Ty Ross had his appendix removed but is expected to return to the Tigers lineup late next week.

I was all set to report on the glowing accomplishments of two incoming Cape Leaguers when I found out that they have recently been added to Team USA. North Carolina State Pitcher of the Year candidate Carlos Rodon, who was expected to pitch for Harwich, is 9-0; 1.59 ERA, with 114 K's, 34 BB, and a .184 OBA in 14 appearances totaling 96 innings. Rodon's Wolfpack teammate, Trea Turner (Y-D), is batting .343 and has swiped 52 bases while only being caught three times.

Nine of the eleven players on the Team USA roster are on CCBL rosters. Rodon and Turner join Kris Bryant (San Diego; Chatham), Austin Cousino (Kentucky; Hyannis), Ryne Stanek (Arkansas; Bourne), Bobby Wahl (Mississippi; Cotuit), Trevor Williams (Arizona State; Orleans), Mike Conforto (Oregon State; Brewster) and Michael Lorenzen (Cal State-Fullerton; Brewster). Lorenzen has just been named a semi-finalist for the NCBWA Dick Howser National Player of the Year Award as a utility player. I am assuming there is a chance we may see some of these players on the Cape for a week before they report to practice in Cary, NC on June 24. Team USA's last game is scheduled to be played in the Netherlands on July 22.

Fresno State's Aaron Judge (Brewster) is batting .320 with 4 HR, 21 RBI and 11 steals in 12 attempts.

C.K. Irby (Harwich) gave up just one run and one hit as Samford upset #2 Florida Tuesday night, 7-3. Irby is now 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA and is holding opposing batters to a .192 avg. A dual-threat, Irby is batting .341 with 45 RBI and a .919 OPS.

A couple other Mariners are pacing Notre Dame's offense. Eric Jagielo is second on the team in batting with a .319 avg. while Trey Mancini closely follows at .315. The duo rank one-two in homeruns and RBI. Mancini has 12 HR and 44 while Jagielo has 11 HR and 41 RBI.

RHP Evan Rutter and RHP/OF Chase McDowell, both from Rice, have been added to Brewster's roster.

Alex DeBellis (C; UConn), Stephen Tarpley (LHP; USC) and Chris Willson (RHP; NC State) have been dropped from Chatham's roster.

27 days 'til Opening Day!

May 21 Update:  Jimmie Sherfy (Y-D) was added to Team USA this past weekend. Michael Lorenzen and Mike Conforto have been removed from Brewster's roster.
